The Duke introduces the new wave of young bands in Lincoln

Friday 17th December sees The Duke of Wellington host a bunch of upcoming Lincoln bands, presented by Power Rated Productions.

The Duke is a venue that has always been around, hosted sweaty gigs for bands that have long grown up and moved out of town, where they had their first pint, where they first realised they loved playing onstage and where their mates could throw themselves around at the front and no one would care. Nostalgic.

Now, recently sold on as far as I know and renamed The Red Room, (the upstairs gig venue, separate from the actual pub) it is hosting a gig that seems to present new blood in terms of Lincoln bands. The line up is this:

Kill the Ideal – shouty, alternative rock from somewhere round here, nice vocals, good looking lads.
Give it Time – bunch of lads from L-town, pop punk, lots of crafted hair styles in this band.
Everything Can Wait – more young pop punk from Lincoln, with a female vocalist, singing about not wanting to grow up.
Lines Across Maps – (very) young group of lads from Horncastle, playing pop punk, nice gang vocals, released their first EP in October, could easily be listening to them on the radio.

Go watch them, praise them, sway around and hopefully watch them grow up as bands over the next few years.

£4 on the door, starts at 7:30pm

Lincoln has turned into NARNIA!

Okay, so Lincoln has come to a stand still over the past couple of days with no buses moving, cars abandoned at the side of the roads, 8 inch snow drifts and shops very much deserted (if open at all). Here at Blueprint HQ we made a snowman named Clive but other than that things have been chugging away as usual.

There’s not a huge amount going on music-wise in the next week or so, just lots of pantomimes and plays at the local theatres and the regular club nights around the city for those who are brave enough to fight the icy pavements.

I thought I would just mention CTRL+ALT+DEL @SCY though, as lots of people have been raving about it recently. It’s a club night on every Thursday and if the thaw has begun by this time next week I recommend you check it out. I know they say it all the time, but it is THE place to be on thursday for Indie, Electro and Dubstep if you like that sort of thing. There’s 2 floors, cheap drinks and it’s honestly quite a cool place. Dress to impress with up turned collar and glasses with the lenses pushed out…nah im joking….

Search good ole facebook for the regular listings and events pages.

REJOICE punk fans of Lincoln!

Rumour has it that Matt from recently retired Crash Doubt promotions is going out with a bang for one last gig. Matt hung up his promoting hat about a month ago, but plans have emerged on good ole facebook of the Lincoln-ite’s final show and it’s going to be a big one! A 2 days festival no less.

So, as per Crash Doubt, the focus will be punk and hardcore with a few acoustic acts thrown in for a breather between bands. The plan is to have the festival at Christopher’s with acoustic acts playing outside and bands playing both floors inside. There will also be a BBQ, distros, face painting and a few beers I’m sure. The aim is to have a good 50+ bands over the Saturday and Sunday 14th and 15th of May 2011 and entry will be ridiculously reasonable considering there will be the cream of the UK scene as well as hopefully catching a few american’s if they’re on tour round these parts.

Put in your diary now and don’t miss it.

Sorry you missed it but have a listen anyway!

Okay, so if you haven’t got tickets then you’re missing out on a brilliant live performance on your doorstep. BUT all hope is not lost.

Seth Lakeman is playing a sold out gig at Lincoln Drill Hall on the 8th of December which is his only sold out date – GO LINCOLN! If you haven’t heard his music, it’s a brilliant fusion of fiddle, violin, drums and acoustic guitar accompanied by his awesome vocals and you can even download a free track from his new album off the website. http://sethlakeman.co.uk/freedownload

He’s also playing in Leicester and other places that would be worth a short drive – he’s good fun and it’s guaranteed you’ll stomp your feet/clap your hands to it.

Rock Against Racism – Lincoln, This Sunday

Big events like this, where you can catch mainly local music talent in one place, don’t happen very often so you’d be a fool to miss it. And what’s more it’s raising awareness of (and money for) an important cause. It’s a teeny weeny £4 on the door, Christopher’s has a nice atmosphere, the drinks aren’t too pricey – it’s going to be a good party.

Line up among others looks like this:

Liberty Strike – loud, anarchist punk

Elliott Morris – young genius with a guitar

The Living Daylights – local boys gruff punk

and from London is Cynics – clever acoustic ramblings from a guy called giles with holey socks….

This isn’t the running order obviously but there’s a brilliant mix of genres for all kinds of tastes, 90% homegrown Lincoln talent, some bands, some solo – just great. Make it down early to not miss anything, sure they’ll be merch for sale too. See you there to support the cause.

(Christpoher’s is on Newland Street, kind if behind the Odeon)

What else have you got to do on a Sunday night eh?

A handful of musical events coming up in Lincoln!

Happy 5th of November! If you’re going anywhere tonight, be safe and also wrap up warm.

Right, a few upcoming events I thought I’d share with you. Hopefully they will suite different tastes, tell your mates, tell your mum and basically get yourself out about enjoying what L town has to offer.

The Venice Notebooks Bonfire Night Gig @The Stags Head

Venice Notebooks play for the first time ever, preceded by Dean Reed and acoustic act followed by the band That’s Not Me, should be a gooooood night.

Starts at 8:30pm and is probably free

Midge Ure Uncovered @The Lincoln Theatre Royal

This will be an intimate acoustic show combining a selection of his own hits from ‘Vienna’ via ‘If I Was’ to ‘Dancing with Tears in my Eyes’, with some of his favourite songs by other artists such as Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac and David Bowie. No doubt mixing this with a few stories, anecdotes and a bit of crowd interaction – why not combine it with a nice dinner for a classy night out in Lincoln City!

Wednesday November 10th

Starts at 7:30 pm, tickets £16.50/£18.50

Acoustic Evening with Karl Svarc and Friends @Cafe Portico – The Terrace

Karl’s music is described as eclectic, smoothly blending elements of Blues, Country and World music. He combines organic rhythms with the lyrical sensitivity of a poet. He is playing an intimate show in none other than Cafe Portico, underneath Blueprint:Film’s very own headquarters, so expect to see some of us there.

Friday November 12th

Starts at 7pm, tickets £5

Abi Moore @The Tap and Spile

Abi is a fantastically talented local acoustic folk singer songwriter, influenced by Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt and Tom McCrae amoung others. She can play tonnes of instruments and has a voice that you need to hear. The Tap and Spile does a tasty pint of cider too.

Friday 12th November

Starts 8pm. I believe it’s free but don’t hold me to it.

International Concert Series: Nicola Benedetti @Lincoln Performing Arts Centre

A return visit from the outstanding young talent Nicola Benedetti, in a full Romantic programme which features her as both recitalist and chamber musician. With a host of talent musicians accompanying her on piano, cello and violin, this is a night not to be missed at the awesome LPAC venue.

Sunday 14th November

Starts 4pm, tickets £15

ENJOY! I’ll be back next week so keep your eyes on Amp for more music news and events.

Stuck for something to do on a Sunday night in Lincoln? warm up those vocal chords!

If you’re one of those people who ever get Sunday evening fever (too much television and lazing around) or you just want to go out for some entertainment if Saturday wasn’t enough, then I’ve got a few suggestions.

Lincoln has a few regular events that you should know about, the kind that don’t advertise but are so awesome they spread by work of mouth. Google maps the places if you don’t know where they are and mosy on down!

The Dog and Bone: Folk Jam Session. First Sunday of every month, starts at 3pm

The Witch & Wardrobe: Open Mic night. Every Sunday, starts 7:30pm

The Brown Cow: Jam night/Open Mic night. Every Sunday, starts 8pm

The Slug and Lettuce: Open Mic night/comedy/spoken word. Every other sunday, starts 7pm

Things to do this Saturday – Halloween in Lincoln!

Okay so here we are, it’s Halloween. Lincoln isn’t the biggest city but there’s lots of things going on this Saturday for those of you who like to celebrate this particular calendar event (apologies to those who get a bit grumpy about it all). I’m mentioning it on here because as with all news on this website, events going on at Halloween pull the punters in with the promise of amazing music – no matter what your taste. I’m giving the low down on the 30th’s events even though Halloween is officially Sunday because most people have w.o.r.k so Saturday is the one to be out and about in town!

UP presents Halloween @Engine Shed

Regular Saturday club night at the Engine Shed on the university campus but this time promising a night of ‘festive frights and scares’…ominous to say the least but they always present slick, stylish nights of good music and high value production. Tickets bought at the foyer before the event are a mere £3 which is brilliant for the shed, more on the night and drinks are usually pricey. It’s bound to have lots of decorations and tonnes of students dressed all out in costume for the event!

FAUX presents a Halloween Special @SCY

Nightclub SCY is all about the ‘cool’. That word is ridiculously nondescript but sums up SCY’s atmosphere very well. DJ’s on two floors playing everything from MIA to Jackson 5, LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk and Chase & Status. A resident photographer is bound to be there snapping fish eye shots left right and centre and this club claims it has the cheapest Saturday night drinks in town – I’ve been there. It’s true. Entry is just £2 before 12 and a mere £3 after.

Halloween @Sugarcubes

Classic grungy rock bar cubes feels like Halloween every night so when Halloween eventually comes around they really step up to the plate. It’s less the club that makes it – more the people. They’ll be zombies, vampires, lots of fake blood and the odd genius costume all dancing in the UV lit, corrugated iron-clad club. If Cubes could make it Halloween every night it would. Cheap drinks, amazing unexpected cocktails in plastic cups and cheap entry. Be warned – they’ll be a queue out the door.

TWISTED TOKYO presents The Horror Ball @Sakura

The website describes the night as ‘wickedly stylish, devilishly sexy and horribly fashionable’. I can’t say much more than that really! You’ll have to see for yourself I guess. This club has a really nice atmosphere every time I go, tonnes of comfy seating, a dance floor that lights up and decent music. Doesn’t say how much it costs but the weekends are pricey here, expect at least a tenner for entry and to put your cape in the store before you even order a pumpkin juice.

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Okay, so these are the main events I personally think are worth checking out in Lincoln but obviously all the bars will be decked out, offers on and costumes will no doubt lower entry fee all over town! Let the scare fest commence!

Mystery Jets DJ set TONIGHT!

Run by JUST club nights of Lincoln, tonight sees a handful of the band Mystery Jets bringing their own unique DJ style to SCY. If you haven’t been to SCY (S.C.Y or sky, no one really pronounces it the same and I have no idea what it really is!) then make this your first time. The last event saw over 700 people come through the doors and with a real carnival atmosphere you’re sure to have a good night. It’s got 2 floors which means 2 bars, sofas to chill on and friendly staff.

Alongside Mystery Jets, to build the excitement, are His Majesty Andre, Mighty Mouse and Urchins – all with different styles and music. This is the club night of the month so get yourself there (if it’s your thing obviously!)
